Pakistan captain Younis Khan on Wednesday said he has no regret over falling short of Hanif Mohammad's national record and West Indies great Brian Lara's 400 during the first Test against Sri Lanka that ended in a draw at National Stadium here.
"I am not someone who plays for records. I am a team-person and I have no regrets over getting out for 313 runs. I am more satisfied that we ended the Test match on a positive note," Younis said after the match.
After resuming on overnight 306, Younis could add only seven runs before he was dismissed by paceman Dilhara Fernando, to much disappointment of a large crowd that had come to the stadium anticipating he would rewrite the history by eclipsing Lara's feat.
Younis on Tuesday became only the third Pakistani to score a Test triple hundred after Hanif (337) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (329).
"I never go for records. Maybe in the future when I get another such chance to make a big score I will get the record. But in this match it was more important for me to show the way and stay at the wicket for long. But yes the innings is very special for me," Younis said.
"To me the plan was if I was there after a while and had got some runs I would have consulted my teammates and coach on whether to go after Lara's record or just concentrate on the declaration," he added.
Younis, who replaced Shoaib Malik as the Pakistan skipper recently, also beleives that the team is still improving and will become a squad to reckon with by the next World Cup.
"Believe me this very team can win the next World Cup. But they need your support. Right now they don't know me as a captain so we are adjusting to each other. But we have some very good players and I am not a captain who is afraid of playing on any sort of pitch. I believe in myself and the players. I play for the team not for records," he said.
Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene admitted it was a tough test for the bowlers of both sides as a plethora of batting records were created on a placid pitch.
"I just hope they don't have a pitch which is anything similar to this one for the second Test in Lahore," he said.
Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene who himself scored 240 and featured in a world record partnership for the fourth wicket with Thilan Samaraweera (231), added: "This was a pitch on which even our bowlers wanted to have a bat. We just need to have more result oriented pitches but I am a visiting captain and I don't have control over what sort of wickets they make."
Jayawardene, who will step down as skipper after the series, said although he was a bit disappointment with the batting performance in the second innings, combined efforts by his teammates were quite satisfying.
"We dominated the match for four days and if we held onto chances things could have been different but once we got 600 we always knew it was not easy to get a team out twice," he said.
On his record partnership with Samaraweera, Jayawardene said: "It was easy to bat with Samaraweera as we have grown up together and played together at school so we know each other."
