England on Monday named Kevin Pietersen as the new cricket captain. He will lead the team in both Tests and ODIs.

Pietersen will lead England in the final Test against South Africa at The Oval on Thursday.

Pietersen takes charge following the shock resignations of Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood from the posts of Test and ODI captain respectively. Both resigned on Sunday, paving the way for Pietersen to become England's 78th captain in 131 years.

Australia, interestingly, have had just 42 in the same period.

Pietersen becomes the fourth South-Africa-born England captain after Tony Greig, Allan Lamb and Andrew Strauss.
